Throw Rag - Desert Shores

Throw rag? What the hell are those pirate folks doing on BYO? I really have no idea… Maxwell from Flogging Molly described this band as The Pogues that grew up on a pirate ship. I’m sure the ship had sunk before reaching its destination though…
That’s right; I don’t like this album very much. For some weird reason BYO signed those guys. They actually turned me on by their mp3 song “Hang up” which sounded old but energetic and great. I got a pleasant feeling of Nostalgia while listening to that song. It’s the nostalgia that remains, but the pleasant feeling is slowly leaving me after the first two songs (Hang up is the second). It’s not easy to describe the style of this weird one of a kind band. Think of your favourite rock ‘n roll band from the 60’s combined with a bit old school punk rock that are doing the laundry with a washing board. The idea of using a washing board is innovating, but doesn’t add much to Throw rag’s music. In fact it irritated me allot.
Let’s see, what else don’t I like about this record? Well, the lead vocals seem to be too weak. I doubt the guy can actually sing live. The music is lacking energy all the time and the pace is just too low to get me a little interested. It’s the nice breaks that keep this record somewhat alive followed by the driving guitar that kind of satisfies me. The intros to most of the songs are pretty good, but what follows is basically just rubbish. Listen to “Beware of the dog” and “Hollywood” to understand what I’m trying to say; the intros are nice, but both the verses and choruses miss the power to convince me of their strengths.
I had a hard time reviewing this record. It’s their weird combination of styles and the failure in doing that on the right way that confused me. They don’t sound like pirate folky punks! They sound like an aged rock ‘n roll band that is trying to be experimental by adding special elements to their music. To me, a very cliché and nostalgic product, but as I said; you either love it or hate it. Give it a try and download “Hang up” here.
