Teenage Bottlerocket - Warning Device

Teenage Bottlerocket bitch!

Two years after the band released their debut Total, they’re back with their second coming Warning Device. Back in 2005, I labeled that album the best of the year and although it’s barely march in 2008, I dare say this disc is going to be a contender for that title this year as well. For those folks not knowing what Teenage Bottlerocket is about, I suggest you make a nice compilation of some Descendents, Ramones and Screeching Weasel songs. Then blend those songs in your head, add a touch of better production values and four ice cubes: you’ll end up with a delicious Teenage Bottlerocket cocktail that sounds surprisingly fresh.

The opening song “Bottlerocket” makes you wonder whether they’ve altered their style a little, as it’s a fast punching punk rock rager that clocks in just under the one minute mark. However, song number two “In The Basement” would fit right in with their debut album’s finest songs. The rest of the album continues on the same high level, with personal highlights being “Social life”, “On my own” and “Totally stupid”.

The only difference with their debut is that Warning Device is a more consistent album. Where I would go nuts on some songs on Total and skip four others, Warning Device holds no bad songs and therefore I hardly have to touch that skip button. Other than the difference in song quality, there are hardly changes to be found, if any. You still get their simplistic style, two outstanding singer/songwriters, awesome easygoing solo’s, good artwork and lyrics about girls, relationships and being locked up in the nuthouse.

Warning Device is a more than successful follow up to Total. I can’t tell you what album I like best, other than that I love them both. When you’re looking for a honest pop-punk album with a traditional approach that still sounds fresh, I suggest you look no further. Bottlerocket!
