Destine - A Dozen Dreams
Reviewed on May 11, 2007 by Roel
Hot damn! I’ve just listen to Destine’s song “Last scene of a plane crash” for ten times straight and I still like it more every time the damn thing starts again.
“Last scene of a plane crash” is the first song of Tilburg based Destine’s first release; their completely free downloadable A Dozen Dreams EP. It’s the kind of song you hear on the radio or in a flashy music video performed by some huge popstar when accidentally zapping by MTV and just can’t help but shamefully liking it. Its insanely catchy melodies get stuck in your head immediately and won’t let you rest for hours. I for one just climbed out of bed to listen to the damn thing again and write this review; just to be released from this demon and be able to sleep.
I dare even say that this would be the best song that the get-up kids have never written. Without a doubt the best powerpop song I’ve heard since the demise of the Travoltas.
Oh, there are four more songs on this EP. All are catchy and melodious pop songs with a slight rock though and perhaps some small hints of punk rock. All four songs are very strong, with a couple of huge choruses. However, they can’t quite live up to the opening track. Exception to that rule is “The disappointment” which comes awfully close.
Apparently Robin van Loenen is the mastermind behind this band, as he wrote all the songs and played all the instruments as well. Vocally, you can clearly hear he’s Dutch because of his accent. His singing sounds a little weak when reaching for those high notes, but I’ll forgive him for that: multitasking is cool. Nicely done I’d say.
I’m sure many people would like the sound of Destine; it’s cheerful, relaxing and accessible. If anything, give the song “Last scene of a plane crash” a try. It’s so good it’s sick. If this shit doesn’t blow up very soon, I don’t know what will.
