Brigade - Operation Bite Back

It could be just me imagining it all, but it seems that I’m expected to listen to non-punk music more each week. Not that there is anything in particular wrong with anything not punk per se, but I’m a writer for EuroPUNK.net. Well anyway, I’ve written the same words a couple of times before already, but the fact remains that I’m always glad to see that new, young bands like Brigade (from Helsinki, Finland) are still around and sending me their records.
You guessed it: Brigade play a style of music that is nothing more than good traditional punk in a modern 90’s jacket. One can’t help but thinking of Rancid, early Dropkick Murphys and Swingin’ Utters when listening to these seven songs, but I can’t really consider that a bad thing. Even Rancid wears their influences on their sleeves right?
The good lads from Helsinki serve us with seven fun and anthemic well played streetpunk tunes full of catchy, toggling guitars, simplistic and easy to sing along choruses and raspy vocals. They’ve got nothing special going on here and that’s just what I love about them. The opening track is a convincing and energetic chunk of streetpunk, while track three could have been taken straight from …And Out Come The Wolves (Rancid couldn’t have done it better really…) and even includes some upbeat guitars at the end of the track. The fast paced “Countdown 3,2,1” and the anthemic “Thru the shields” are of the same high quality.
If you, like myself, still like your punk rock rather raw, credible and catchy at the same time; this is certainly worth checking out. For as far as this genre of music stretches, Brigade hardly do anything wrong. The two longer tracks on here might not be as interesting as the rest of the bunch and I must admit that everything has been done zillion times before, but if you’re into this kind of punk rock at all I’m sure you like this very much.
