Interview with Every Time I Die

Posted on Apr 16, 2008 by DevotedToMusic

Every Time I Die are a rock band from Buffalo, New York who formed in the winter of 1998. They have toured with bands such as My Chemical Romance, Killswitch Engage, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Parkway Drive.

I Alexandra McLoughlin was lucky to be able to interview Andy at the Astoria 2 in London....

You guys have just been nominated for Breakthrough Artist at the Golden Gods awards. How do you feel about that?

Andy- I just found out about it like 2 days ago. Is it a big deal?

Yes

Andy- Really?! I guess I’m stoked then because over there in the States we don’t have stuff like this. At the end of the year Revolver will do record of the year and then your publicist will call you a day before they’re going to put the magazine like and are like “Oh yeah well you guys are up for it..Cool” and you go to the store and your like it’s not a big deal you know what I mean?!

You really don’t have any big music awards in America?

Andy- Not for bands like us and there’s the Grammy’s but we’re never going to get nominated for a Grammy.

That’s not fair is it? (laughs)

Andy- It’s not. I’m stoked about it. Actually getting an award for what we do is amazing and it’s awesome!

Are you confident that your band are going to win it?

Andy- Who else is in it?

Erm..I can’t remember the rest of the people to be honest.

Andy- No. We’re not going to win it. I hope we do that would be awesome.

Are you guys actually going to go to the awards ceremony at the 02 arena?

Andy- One of us is going to have to fly over here because we’re off until I think until what is it? June the 16th?

Yeah June the 16th.

Andy- I think….we start tour on the 20th of June so maybe.

I know that they are going to take place obviously at the O2 arena. Have any of you guys been there before?

Andy- No.

Would you like to?

Andy- What is it?

It’s like a holiday destination when you’re inside it. It used to be known as the millennium dome in 2000 and it has lots of restaurants and film premieres there sometimes. The Simpsons premiere was there. It’s just amazing; it has a massive cinema and gigs there.

Andy- That’s awesome! I would love, that that would be great!

My Chemical Romance played there last year.

Andy- Yep?

Yeah and Prince.

Andy- Prince played there?!

Oh yeah!

Andy- That’s awesome! I was just listening to him.

Have you looked around town yet? You’ve probably been in London quite a while now?

Andy- Yeah just a little bit. Denmark Street took up pretty much all my time because Guitars and Amps are kind of my thing so..

You were in heaven?

Andy- Yeah it was like looking at Gold I guess.

Your latest album THE BIG DIRTY came out in September. Who named the album the BIG DIRTY?

Andy- Erm…We were going through a ton of names and then Keith came in..It’s actually on the DVD for the CD when he walks in and he says “Hey I got the name for the record” we’re all like what “The big Dirty”..It was actually real time it wasn’t set up. It was like he walked in and the camera happened to be on him. Yeah so I think Keith came up with it.

What did your friends and family think of the album when it first came out?

Andy- Erm to be honest my parents loved it.

Excellent!

Andy- Yeah they actually liked the record a lot.

That’s a bit of a surprise isn’t it because sometimes parents just disagree with it and it’s like they say it on purpose..

Andy- Yeah get a job.

Some of the bands you’ve toured with this year are Killswitch Engage, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Parkway Drive that’s just a few of them…who has been the most fun to tour with?

Andy- This year? Just this year?

Yeah.

Andy- Well we just did a tour with The Bled. That was probably the funniest. We just got off tour with The Bled just before we came here and that was probably the best band we’ve toured with in a long time. They are just great dudes. It’s like the Mexican version of us.

The Mexican version of you?!

Andy- Yeah of Every Time I Die like Russ would be me and James would be Keith..but yeah it’s just like our counter part. They are just a band where every single member we just vibe with. It’s just great!

That’s obviously a good thing..

Andy-Yeah very good like we could start a Every Time I Die The Bled big band and it would be awesome!

In terms of very crazy fans..What that you’ve witnessed has been the maddest in terms of what they have asked you to do?

Andy- There has been a lot. I met like some Porn Star chick and she was like “I’m 18” and I was just like “cool” and she was like “How old are you?” I’m like “I’m 30” and then she’s like “without all this talk what have we got to do to get you out of your clothes?” and I was like “Are you kidding me? I’m going to go get my s**t off stage” It was just like people offering off there body up is just weird to me but I think that’s the craziest thing you could possibly do. I remember I watched Dillinger ages ago..This is probably 12 years ago and some dude wanted to get a hoodie and he bought..no we wanted a vinyl press of ‘Under the running board’ and he drove from Montreal to Buffalo which is like 7 hours of something like that and they were like “Ok we will..He said he’d spent all his money” He’s like “I only got enough money to get back but I want this vinyl” but they are like “We’re going to fill this (they had like a pitcher a beer pitcher) and spit in it the whole show” and the guy drank it for the vinyl. That’s probably one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen.

That’s pretty gross!

Andy- It’s disgusting! I hate spit!

What are your favourite UK bands at the moment?

Andy- I love Blackhole! I think Blackhole is amazing they are fantastic! Erm..Gallows is good. You guys have a lot of bands coming up right now but those 2 right there are probably the most. Bullet for my Valentine are s**t to me I don’t like them.

Why?

Andy- It’s just not music I like. There is nothing real to their music like for me there is no heart in it. Erm..I dunno I’ll probably get s**t for that but whatever I find it really fake but Blackhole and Gallows it’s real! Those dudes want to make that music!

What’s next for Every Time I Die?

Andy- What isn’t next? Erm..we do this tour then we go back and do Warped tour in the States and then after Warped tour there is talk about coming back here on like a big, big tour. I can’t talk about it though but yeah we’re coming back on a major, major tour of like the UK and the world.

Good Luck with that!

Andy- Thank you.

Thank you for letting me interview you.

Andy- Anytime.
