Interview with Pretty Trash

Posted on Aug 5, 2007 by DevotedToMusic

Pretty Trash are a Punk band from Southampton UK with not only great looks but mesmorising lyrics and guitar riffs.

I Alexandra McLoughlin was lucky enougth to catch up with Krissy to find out a bit about the band's history and more...

Hi Krissi, Who started Pretty Trash?

Jim (guitarist) followed with Adi (guitar), Chris (drums) and Dave (bass). I joined in September 2006.

When and where did you form?

Salisbury, Wiltshire. I was emailed via myspace by Jim asking if I knew any vocalists, I had recently been kicked out of a band for not wanting to write ballads so to hear a band with demos with riffs in the quality of "backyard babies" and other of my favourite bands, jumped on board and here we are, I got told I was in the band at a "Ginger and the sonic circus" show, Turns out I'd had many confrontations with Dave (bass) at gigs years before I even auditioned.

Pretty Trash have had some brilliant reviews. How do you feel about that?

The bad reviews we've had, have often been reflective on the person who's reviewed us. They've not played music and they are not happy with themselves, Music critics are sad and lonely people.

The good reviews we've had are from people who often have an eclectic music taste and have always come up to have a chat with us after the show.

Do they make you stronger as a band?

Everybody has a different opinion, we have parts of a show we like and some things that just don't go to plan so we work harder at the next rehearsal.

Tell me a bit about your EP…

The "number one" EP, That was recorded within 4 weeks of me joining Pretty Trash, I remember the recording well I had a sore throat and the day I recorded vocals my train to the studio was delayed and it was a nervous day. First time I had properly recorded vocals for anything that was serious as opposed to covers for a music technology student. The guitars sound kick ass, The drums are pounding and the bass is electric throughout.

How about the new EP that is coming soon? What is it going to be like?

We are working on songs for the next ep, we're not sure when it will be recorded but we tend to go through things with every detail sometimes it can take time, the possible songs for the EP are "Olivia", "Sublime", "Ain't no voodoo", "Damn the Distance" we also are working on a new one "Loyalty is not a virtue". I look forward to it very much.

You have a show coming up in your hometown with Trashlight Vision, Patchwork Grace and more. Are you excited?

Well our first Southampton show was with Trashlight Vision before Christmas, but of course that tour was postponed, so now our tenth gig in this line-up of the band is with TLV. Recently went to the Redhill and London shows and I know what we're competing with, especially with Plastic Toys playing right after us that night. I dj'd to Patchwork Grace in Camden last year, Very good live band and I've been in touch with Crip ever since. Excited... We're nervously ecstatic.

Have you got a large fanbase in your hometown?

It's Growing, there are two camps, The Salisbury Camp, The Southampton camp. Most of the shows we've played at the joiners have been expensive and people have not known who bands like "The Supersuckers" and "Dirty Rig" are, we've not really had problem with local show ticket sales. It takes time to form a solid fan base, now the smoking ban has taken effect I wonder if the venues are going to be emptier.

We seem to get more requests from Swedish people to go play there.. Send us the cash and we'll do it :).

“Seeing Red” was your first song to be promo’d on the radio and local venues. Why did you choose that song?

"Seeing Red" is our live opener, and usually where we are the opening band people seem to come in halfway through that song or halfway through our set, Fashion Whore has too many "Fucks" for the radio, and We don't like the recording of "Gotta get away".

"Seeing Red" has everything good about the band, riffs, rythm, energy and attitude, its been played in between bands like "Metallica" "The cult" "The who" "Led Zeppelin" It's very warming to hear "Seeing Red" inbetween "My Generation" and "Immigrant Song"

We've also done radio interviews, where the DJ's shocked that we're confident to talk more than the majority of bands he had interviewed before.

What is your favourite venue that you have played so far?

Southampton Joiners, There is a sound engineer called Martin who always has it spot on with the sound, 5 minutes flat. Salisbury Arts Centre is a fantastic venue we had a dressing room and vanity mirrors, showers, a fridge and a rail for clothes before we went on stage, but the acoustics weren’t too good.

Are you planning another tour?

We have yet to tour properly, I'd like to get out there and play a show everynight up and down the country, it’s what this music is about. It would depend on finances and our bosses. Mikki from "The Dropoutz" wanted to take us on the road, but they've not hit the UK yet sadly,

What band do you want to tour with the most?

I'd like to say Hanoi Rocks or Buckcherry, I'd settle for touring with bands like Aiden if the offer came around.

Do you think you will get the opportunity?

We will probably have the opportunity to tour with a band, A friend of mine is now playing bass in an old glam metal band, when they reach the uk, if the timings right, you will see us out there.

Finally is there anything else you would like to say??
