Jaya The Cat at W2 Den Bosch

It’s been almost two years since I saw Jaya The Cat play. Back then they used to be one of my favorite bands, but they recently kind of slipped of the radar somehow. I was anxious to hear what new stuff they got for us (it’s been over three year since the last album) and if they still got that special vibe live I experienced a couple of times already. It was also the right time to do a little research. Considering the tour being heavily sponsored by Converse, I decided to test whether the amount of chucks on the band members feet equal musical talent.
Before Jaya, San Andreas got to open the night with an energetic half hour of their take on the whole emo/hardcore/metal vibe. Although I’m not a fan of the genre, I can’t deny that San Andreas was pretty competent. Although not that many people where there to watch their set, their stage-performance was pretty energetic. The singer had a good voice and jumped back and forth from grunt to high screaming and clean vocals seemingly effortless. He was backed up very well by the clean vocals provided by the drummer. Although SA played well, I don’t think their sound is very special or any different than the rest of the crop out there. Their cocky attitude was therefore rather misplaced. Nice set either way. The bassist was the only one who whore his chucks.
Cooper was up next. I was rather excited to finally see them play as I really liked their last album and missed out on them three times before. I can’t say their set did “it” for me though. I guess their blend of punk, pop and rock was too danceable to be moshable and too moshable to be really danceable. Makes sense? Although tight they looked a bit boring on stage. The lead vocals sounded a little weak for my taste and the crowd never seemed very much into them. Although some songs from their last album sounded quite appetizing and the new songs they played sounded promising, I was left a little disappointed. No chucks here by the way.
The headliner of the night, Jaya The Cat, was up last. They still don’t seem to have found a steady line-up of members, considering I never saw the guitar player before. Nevertheless, the band played a fun set that only left a couple of songs to be desired (shit jobs, twist the cap). They equally divided the set over their two albums, also including a Clash-cover (Armagideon Time) and just one new song. I was hoping to hear some more new songs from the soon to be released album, but they left us with the previously digitally released single only. Their punky reggae entertained the crowd just as much as the previous few times I’ve seen them play and the band seemed to enjoy it equally as much. Once again I notice a lack of chucks (except for the bassist of San Andreas behind their special Tiki-bar passing out drinks to the crowd).
With a good feeling I left the show without being amazed by any of the bands. San Andreas did their thing, Cooper was ok and Jaya The Cat did what you expected them to do. It was a fun and relaxed show with a nice atmosphere. That was really all I wanted and expected from this show tonight, thus I went home satisfied.
Oh; the conclusion of my little field-research? Converse does not equal musical quality. You might as well go Prada.
