Give It A Name Introduces

An almost operatic surge of trailing voices scream back 17 year-old Hayley Williams’ upbeat hooks to “Whoa,” and current Paramore single, “Pressure.” Tonight’s emphatic reception of Fueled By Ramens fledgling gem, mirrors a smidgeon of the past year’s mounting buzz circling the American four-piece. The growing adoration of the pop-punkers debut opus, All We Know Is Falling is intensifying in the UK. A near full Garage hosts Give It A Name festival’s warm-up, also featuring rowdy Welsh troop, The Blackout, Classic Case and fellow Statesmen, Drive By.
From the moment they enter, The Blackout is everything they could’ve hoped to be. Witty, explosive and infectious. However, tonight’s Paramore allure has left vox duo, Gavin Butler and Sean Smith’s violent gyrations and gravely yelps unrequited. The crowd, mostly here to sing to Paramore’s more buoyant anthems, exchange the stirring “Go Burn City Hall,” and thunderous riffery with static, almost disinterested gazes. The mood intensifies as Classic Case exposes its mix of alt-prog craftwork -“Hospitalized,” is a winner. Known for excellent live shows, Classic do not disappoint, spanning every inch of the stage with gripping acrobatics and engaging gestures from front man, Jared Draughon. Emotional axe-man, Moore frequently looks on the verge of combustion as he delivers belting vocal support that often beams above the main vocals.
The guitar rigs here tonight are immense, each note follows the last unmistakably. Both, The Blackout and Classic Case axe-men enjoy impeccable guitar clarity. The same cannot be said for show stealers, Paramore, who despite a quick and professional recovery, encounter some technical bogeys early in their set. Drive By commendably closes a memorable bill. As the drastically shrunken floor witness Drive By’s fuming alt-emotional blend, the band grumpily bite, “why is everyone so tired, its only nine ‘o clock?” Paramore, that’s fucking why dudes. For Paramore fans lucky enough to catch tonight’s small-ish gig, consider tonight’s intimacy short-lived. Paramore are well on their way.
4/5 stars.
