Band Profile: 7 Years Bad Luck

Added on Nov 8, 2004

When it comes down to melodic punk rock, there seems to be nothing that has not been said already. It would be absurd to claim that 7yearsbadluck is the band that revolutionizes this genre, but still this Austria three-piece brings in something - let us call it a feeling - that is kind of new. Growing up in a countryside area surrounded by mountains, one is confronted more directly with the up and down situations of life. 7yearsbadluck pack these experiences & memories in songs about love & loss, failing expectations, remedies, tiredness, anger or loneliness. These mostly melancholic lyrics clash with cordial harmonies and create a powerful symbiosis that reflects daily life without telling the typical stories about girls & boys, or war & politics. When George B. Shaw said: “There are two tragedies in life. One is not to get your heart’s desire, the other is to get it.” he kind of gave birth to the feeling now adopted by three Austrians with the desire to pass it on.

7yearsbadluck's hour of birth brings us back to the year 2001. In the beginning the line-up was Giorgio on guitar & vocals, Andropov on vocals & bass (both former members of punkrock-band Cornholio, who had decided to call it quits earlier the same year) and Roland on drums. Inspired by bands such as No Use For A Name, Face to Face or Goldfinger, 7yearsbadluck started to go its own way from the very start and started playing shows in and around the country, thus gaining stage experience and improving their live show from time to time. Half a year later a first 6-song EP called 'When John Hoe Ruled The Earth' was released.

In fall 2002 the band had its first tour through Germany, Czech Republic, Poland and Austria, which was followed by 2003's 'No Socks, No Sleep, No Compromise'-Tour. That trip took the band (again accompanied by Loony Brain) through Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands and introduced new drummer John Hoegaarden as a perfect replacement for Roland, who had quit the band due to internal trouble. Furthermore it gave 7yearsbadluck the opportunity to present their first full-length record entitled 'Happiness For Slobs' which was kind of a best-of-album of Giorgio & Andropov’s song-writing of the past few years. Meeting new people, travelling and enjoying life on the road in general have always since been some of the band's most inspiring experiences.

7yearsbadluck had begun to attract peoples attention, yet the band did not stop expanding its own musical horizons. A growing maturity regarding the songwriting and tighter sounds altogether were the result of a lot of stage presence. In a natural process the melodycore of the early days was overtaken by a rockier, more compact sound.

Over the years 7yearsbadluck had the opportunity to share the stage with bands such as Ten Foot Pole, Four Square, Shelter, The Lawrence Arms, Venerea, The Groovie Ghoulies, Distemper etc.

In April 2004 another tour through Germany and Austria was played with Germany's Noopinion, shortly after which they decided to enter the 20er studios in Graz, Austria, joined by producer Nickl Gruber, to record their 3rd effort, an EP entitled 'A Tragedy In Two Chapters'. The 5 songs on the record reflect three guys that are a lot happier with what they are doing, but it's obvious that 7yearsbadluck are on their way for more ...
