Band Profile: Aside

About the band:

Put aside backyard roots, neighborhood influences sometimes taken for granted, and travel beneath oceans of independent underground scenes filtering through, and halt… here is Portugal’s Aside, five guys who firmly believe in music and mutual responsibility. This is their tale...

Initiated on Lisbon’s sunny coast in 2000, a local decaying scene sent them on a quest to write novel-inspired songs of their own. If we must compare, their sound is a syringe full of Samiam, Bodyjar & Millencolin tidings, pricked with influences of Starmarket and Unwritten Law’s more heartening hymns.

Amid jam time and loud clamor they realized this material had become the tangibles of a full set list, and they took to the kids for their first performance: an outdoor festival on July 7th, 2001. Zealous new rockers, and attentive to their founding support, they ran out of free promos and stickers by night’s end. Local shows were seeping in, and ideas of recording an album were evident. Their studio hours and conflicting schedules caused some delay on their beloved project, but after a year of persistence Aside’s first release "Good Enough For Someone Else" saw the light of stereos.

In 2002 came attention from Canada: Aside signed a Canadian licensing deal with Freedumb Records. With overseas support, they took conscious note and booked a Canadian tour in 2003, finding any means of funds to fly out for foreign stages. The success of this international experience was overwhelming, playing for unknown kids in masses of hundreds; Aside returned with a new keen hunger. Total Horror Booking in Europe approached the band, proposing to recruit them to their roster of bands booked across Europe. With gigs firmly in check, Aside’s packing the van again in April, descending on four new countries, including The Netherlands for the second time, as well as Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and possibly France for more new frenzied faces, places and stages.

Undisturbed by all the serpentine handlings each band lives, and must to firmly prove they’ve worn at the edges enough to be a force to be reckoned with, Aside’s conquered many obstacles to remain standing. From beginning cherished relationships in Portugal with Easyway, More Than A Thousand, Fiona At Forty, Schooldrivers(Spain) and Summer Of Damien, to recently being graced with the chances to play with Catch 22, Big D & The Kids Table, Raise Kain(Netherlands), G.A.S Drummer(Spain) and A Common Ground(Germany), their quest continues.

After appearances on countless compilations, including Belgium’s Bullet Magazine’s first comp series featuring The Satanic Surfers and Jimmy Eat World and coverage on punknews.org & punkupdates.com, Aside just want to play music, be it for a backyard beach party or a snowed-in hockey hall; they thrive to keep going up and down this terrain. No rules, no short-sighted synthetic lyrics to cry about or fire-eating curses of hot-headed hardcore hate, this is maintained punk rock and downright fitted for prescription.

What the Press says…

"This young band from Portugal is one of the biggest European Newcome acts. Their combination of catchy and melodic vocals + rocking and technical guitarparts and a real rocking bass and drum rythmsection will bring this band to high levels. Their new album "Good enough for someone else" is one of the freshest and most inspirating albums of the Emopunk Headquarter, definetly a band of the next years"...
Daniel RP-PUNKROCK Records (Germany)

"In September 03 I saw those guys for the first time playing live in their home country Portugal while being on tour. And I was stocked by their live performance and acting on stage, One could see how much they love what they are doing when they play their songs live. Amazing Band with amazing songs I thought. So in conclusion I decided to put them up to my rooster and book shows for them. Iím very proud to work for/with a good and friendly band. "

I must say: as i noticed this band on stage, I picked up some very cool riffs, some very nice vocals and some powerfull songs. These songs make people happy, sad, homesick, emotional at the same time. Aside managed the develop a sound who is original, I hear some influences, but, it's not the same of some other new upcoming bands. I guess Aside have the potential to be one of the bands you finally can say: 'ok, at last a band that has some original ideas and make their own style, instead of picking up some tunes of others. Even if I think that they reached a nice level, i'm wondering what they will bring us next time. I can hardly wait... So, Portugal: not longer the land of some nice beaches, but also a country with some young talented fellows who make it worth setting up nice shows.

Aside has a more mature approach reminiscent of the Swedish powerhouse's recent material. "Good Enough For Someone Else", the band's debut effort, is most appropriately described as sober pop punk...Aside demonstrates on these ten tracks a sharp sense for heartfelt melodies…There's no disappointments in Aside's first album as far as I can see, from an album that's in no way electrifying either. It's a little bit too upbeat to fit in to the emo mould, instead serving as something of a rainy day pop punk album. It'll cheer you up without oozing sunshine and happiness...

With Aside, it‚s all about rocking out in a sweet mellow kind of way. Starting from an apt sense of technical know-how, Aside really is able to expand their tunes with something more vast and deep-going than you are used to hear by means of some truly remarkable guitar-play. The riffage on this album really borders on the edge of genius at times...but there’s nothing that will make you go Waauw when listening to this album at first, until you find you will put it on again and again and again...I have been listening to this album for the past couple of weeks now, and I really haven‚t reached the saturation point yet. I guess what it comes down to is that Aside really are skilled musicians, that create songs that might not be instantly catchy but carry an adequate dose of poppy-ness to make them accessible to mostly anyone...the vocals on this one showcase an amazing range and variety as well...“Good Enough For Someone Else“ is just one of those albums that in the end, is simply good enough for everyone else...enough personality and flair to satisfy the most demanding people..
